Q&A — Extracting ROI from Investments in Employee Training


FAQ:  How does an organization improve the payback for its investments in training employees about core business skills?

ANS:  Adding and/or improving the after-training programs (ATP) and follow-up processes can often fix this missing component in traditional training cultures.  When left to stand alone, training is strictly a cost, an expense, a drain on cash, time away from assigned tasks and duties.

ANS
:  A possible training extension would be to co-opt the trainees’ chain-of-command to follow-up and mentor their respective teams.  The risk to ROI is how day-to-day priorities of the local business unit can too often interrupt the imperative of integrating all newly trained skills into the organization.  When true, this mentoring gets diluted, delayed and sometimes set aside.  

FAQ:  After-training, it is out of the question to deploy consultants who will mentor every trainee.  What other options are there to ensure ROI from rapid deployment of new skills into the critical business processes?
